The Reverend James H. McPhail has been Associate Minister at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church for over 11 years.  His major areas of responsibility are Pastoral Care, the Caring Ministries, and Senior Adults.

His involvement in the life of the church covers many areas.  He always goes with the Senior High youth on their week- long WorkCamp each summer.  He teaches in Vacation Bible School each summer and leads the minister’s part of the Children’s Christmas Eve Service each year.  He teaches in many of the adult Sunday School classes.

Prior to his coming to Memorial   Drive, Jim served as Senior Minister of Klein UMC in Houston, First UMC in Lufkin, and West University UMC in Houston.  While at Klein, the church membership grew to 3300 making it one of the 10 largest churches in the Conference.  During his tenure at West University, the church was able to attract numerous young families so the demographics of the church dramatically changed giving the church an exciting future.

Jim and his wife, Janie, have been married for 30 years.  Janie is a middle school teacher in the Houston ISD.  They have two grown daughters, Jordan and Ashley.

Jim graduated from Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, KY and did Post-graduate studies at Perkins School of Theology at SMU.  Jim grew up in Tyler, Texas, graduating from high school there.

Jim has been active in the Texas Conference serving on many different boards and agencies.  He has served as Trustee of Lakeview Conference Center, Methodist Mission Home, Pinecrest Retirement Community of the Methodist Retirement Communities, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes of Houston.  He served as Chair of the Milam County Child Welfare Board and President of the Angelina County Ministerial Association.
