Job seekers often put their search on hold during the holiday season. Those that do may be missing out on their best chance to start the New Year employed.

Job hunters often take a break between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day — assuming that potential employers aren’t likely to do much hiring. Career counselor Juliana Ashley says that’s a mistake.

“Right now is the time when a lot of companies are amping up, and they’re actually doing a lot of interviewing. They’re looking to fill positions so that they can start the year with a full slate of employees.”

Ashley works for Job Search 101. The Houston-based nonprofit is offering free workshops on searching for jobs through the holidays at its West Houston and Memorial locations.

“What we do at JS 101 is we try to get our job seekers out there looking and teach them how to network, how to talk to people about their jobs, and really lay the groundwork now, so that come January, they’ve got offers.”
